Getting Started in Second Life

Create • Explore • Connect

A friendly introduction to creating an avatar, entering the world, and beginning your first adventure.

What Is Second Life?

Second Life is an online virtual world created by Linden Lab. Residents use avatars to explore destinations, meet people, attend events, create objects, take photographs, build communities, and develop their own virtual spaces.

Second Life is not a traditional game with a fixed storyline or final objective. You decide what you want to explore and what kind of experience you want to create.

1. Create Your Account

Begin by creating an account on the official Second Life website. You will select a username, create a password, provide the required account information, and choose a starting avatar.

Your username becomes part of your identity in Second Life, so choose one you will be comfortable keeping.

2. Choose a Viewer

A viewer is the program used to enter Second Life. New residents can begin with the official Second Life Viewer. Firestorm is another popular viewer that provides additional tools and customization options.

Start with whichever viewer feels most comfortable. You can change viewers later without changing your account or avatar.

3. Learn the Basic Controls

Your first sessions should focus on a few essential skills:

Do not worry about learning everything immediately. Second Life has many tools, and most residents learn them gradually.

4. Personalize Your Avatar

Your avatar can remain simple or become a detailed creative project. You can change its shape, skin, hair, clothing, animations, accessories, and even its species.

Experiment with free and inexpensive items before making major purchases. This gives you time to discover the appearance and style that suit you.

5. Explore the World

Use the destination guide, search tools, landmarks, and recommendations from other residents to find places that interest you.

Possible destinations include:

6. Meet People Carefully

Second Life is built around its residents and communities. Be friendly, respect personal boundaries, and take time to understand the rules of each destination.

Protect your personal information just as you would anywhere else online. You control how much information you share and who may contact you.

7. Try Creating Something

After becoming comfortable with the basics, try taking photographs, decorating a small space, editing your avatar, building a simple object, attending a class, or joining a community project.

Second Life becomes most rewarding when you move from simply visiting the world to participating in it.

Your First Adventure

There is no single correct way to experience Second Life. Explore slowly, ask questions, save the places you enjoy, and let your interests guide you.
